Coed Tre'r-parc

The woodland around Ruthin has character - dense, working forest that feels properly Welsh rather than manicured. Coed Tre'r-parc sits just outside town and gives you a genuine sense of what the Clwydian range landscape actually is, rather than the postcard version.

It's a straightforward forest walk, nothing fancy. You're moving through native broadleaf woodland with a decent canopy, the kind of place where the light gets interesting and you can actually hear the trees. The paths are clear enough but they're not theme-park smooth - wear decent boots if it's been wet. Most people can manage it in an hour or so, though walkers who know the area often spend longer picking out the quieter trails that loop back on themselves.

Families with school-aged kids will get something out of it, but younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. It works better as a proper walk destination if you're staying at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite just down the road - a chance to stretch the legs without needing to drive. Serious woodland walkers will appreciate it more than casual tourists.

The big draw is it's free and close to Ruthin town centre, so you can combine it with an afternoon looking round the market town itself. Worth the detour if you're already in Denbighshire, but don't plan a whole day around it alone.
