About Coed Y De
This is walkers' territory. The terrain is soft underfoot and the canopy dense enough that it stays cool even on warm days. History buffs will appreciate that you're moving through proper old growth - the kind of Welsh borderland forest that's been here for centuries. Children will either love the freedom of it or get bored within twenty minutes, depending on whether they're the type to build dens or demand a visitor centre.
There's no entrance fee or obvious facilities that I could pin down, so come prepared. Allow an hour minimum to make it worthwhile, longer if you're the type to stop and sit. The forest works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading to Goytree Glamping or Grove Farm for lunch - both are excellent bases and only four or five miles away. It's the kind of place you'd combine with a walk into Hereford itself rather than treat as a standalone destination. Go when the light filters through properly, probably late spring through early autumn.
