Coed-y-Gell

Dense woodland paths wind through this slice of Anglesey forest just south of Amlwch, where the canopy creates proper shade even on the brightest summer days. The Welsh name translates roughly to 'wood of the grove', which sums it up nicely - this is ancient woodland at its most unspoiled.

Families will find the going easy enough for younger walkers, though proper walking boots are wise given the uneven forest floor. Bird watchers do particularly well here, with the mixed deciduous trees attracting everything from woodpeckers to finches. The relative quiet makes it a lovely counterpoint to Anglesey's busier coastal attractions.

Autumn transforms the place completely - the leaf colours are genuinely spectacular, making it well worth timing your visit for late September or October. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, though the midges can be persistent in the warmer months.

You'll need a couple of hours to explore the main paths properly, though dedicated walkers could easily stretch it to half a day. The forest connects to broader footpath networks, so bring an OS map if you're planning anything ambitious.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Tyddyn Isaf or Minffordd makes this an easy morning or afternoon excursion. It's particularly handy when the weather's too rough for beach days - the trees provide proper shelter from Anglesey's notorious winds.
