Coille na Totaig

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Coille na Totaig, just a short drive from Kyle of Lochalsh. It's a working forest that doesn't put on airs - you get genuine Highland atmosphere without the tourist machinery. The trees are dense and tall, the paths wind through birch and pine, and on a clear day you catch glimpses across toward Skye. There's something grounding about walking through a managed forest where you're not the main attraction.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. If you're after a gentle stroll with a view, you'll want somewhere else. But if you like proper trails through actual woodland - the kind where you need decent boots and don't mind the occasional muddy section - then this works. You can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day here depending on which paths you take. Families with younger kids might find it a bit relentless, but teenagers who'll actually walk without complaining will get more from it.

The access is straightforward and free, which is always welcome in the Highlands. It pairs brilliantly with the caravan parks nearby - Reraig on Skye is less than four miles away, and Glenshiel sits at five and a half. Use it as a proper walking base rather than a destination in itself. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light through the trees and fewer other people about. Skip it if you're expecting Highland drama; come here if you want to actually move through the landscape rather than just photograph it.
