Collingwood Nature Reserve

The reserve sits on the edge of Cranbrook, a sprawl of woodland and open grassland that feels properly removed from the town despite being barely five minutes' walk away. You're looking at roughly 40 acres of mixed habitat - mature trees, scrubby thickets, a bit of water if the seasons have been kind. The paths are well-trodden but never feel crowded, and there's a genuine sense of being away from things.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a rushed visit. Birdwatchers do well here, especially in spring and autumn when migration gets interesting. Families with younger kids will find it manageable - nothing too demanding, though the paths can get a bit muddy after rain. The reserve isn't dramatic or showy. No sweeping vistas, no Instagram-baiting features. But that's rather the point. If you're after space to think, a proper walk without the crowds, or just somewhere to actually see a newt or hear a woodpecker, Collingwood delivers.

For those camping at The Original Hut Company down the road, this makes an excellent morning or early evening stroll before settling in for the night. Give it 90 minutes if you're ambling and actually looking about. The reserve is free, and there's no nonsense about opening times - you get the sense you can turn up when it suits you. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't expect it to be the main event of your trip.
