Hilly Wood

The woodland around Cranbrook feels proper old-growth - the kind of place where you lose track of time wandering between oak and beech. Hilly Wood lives up to its name: there's genuine elevation here, with paths that climb and dip rather than just meander flatly through the trees. You won't find much in the way of facilities or signage, which is honestly part of its appeal. This is working woodland, not a manicured country estate.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain keeps things interesting if you're used to woodland rambles, and there's enough cover that even grey days feel atmospheric rather than dreary. Parents with very small children might find the hilliness a bit much for a pushchair, but older kids who can manage a proper walk will enjoy the undulating paths and fallen logs to clamber over.

Time-wise, allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore rather than just dash through. The nearest town is Cranbrook, which sits about 2 miles away and has the usual facilities if you need a coffee or a bacon roll beforehand. Several camping spots are within easy striking distance - Glassenbury Camping is closest at just over 2 miles, with Tanner Farm Park a bit further out. After a day in the woods, those sites offer decent bases for exploring the wider Kent countryside.

It's not a destination in itself, but as an afternoon detour during a park-based holiday in the area, it's well worth the walk.
