Colliston Park

The Urr estuary at Colliston Park is one of those places you stumble upon by accident - a proper working nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself. It sits just outside Dalbeattie, a small Dumfries & Galloway town that's more focused on its granite heritage than tourism, which somehow makes it feel more genuine.

What you get here are tidal mudflats, salt marsh, and woodland paths where serious birdwatchers come to spot curlew, oystercatcher, and the occasional wintering whooper swan. The estuary changes completely depending on the tide, so low water reveals vast stretches of mud that wading birds flock to, while high tide transforms everything into water. It's genuinely interesting if you're into that sort of thing - less so if you're expecting manicured viewpoints and benches.

The walk itself is straightforward rather than dramatic. You're not climbing anything steep, just following the water's edge through what feels like proper countryside rather than a managed attraction. An hour gets you a decent sense of it, though serious birdwatchers often stay longer with binoculars.
