Coltclose

The trees here are proper dense, which comes as a relief when you've been tramping around the fells near Penrith and need a break from the wind. Coltclose is a working woodland rather than a manicured park - you get the sense people actually use it for timber, not just weekend strolls. The paths wind through decent coverage and it's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birds instead of just seeing them dart away.

Walkers will appreciate the relative shelter, especially if the weather turns cagey as it often does in Cumbria. It's not a destination in itself - you're not coming from the south coast for this - but if you're based at Beckses Caravan Park five miles out, it's genuinely useful as a half-morning sortie. Kids won't get much from it beyond "look, more trees," but that's not really the point. This is about having somewhere green and quiet when the high ground gets too exposed or wet.

The whole area around Penrith pulls double duty if you're after both open fell walking and something more sheltered. Coltclose fits the second category without any fuss. No visitor centre nonsense, no entry charges that I'm aware of, just a working forest where you can actually get some peace. Given how much of Cumbria gets rammed with day-trippers, that simplicity is rather welcome.
