Lodge Wood

Walk into Lodge Wood from Penrith and you're immediately swallowed by proper forest - tall conifers and mixed woodland that feels a world away from the town despite being practically on its doorstep. It's the kind of place where you can stretch your legs for half an hour or disappear for the afternoon, depending on what you've got in you.

The wood itself isn't spectacularly dramatic. There are no waterfalls or rocky outcrops to photograph, no rare birds you'll spot from the path. What you get instead is straightforward forest walking - well-maintained trails, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and genuinely peaceful quiet. The locals know it, which means it doesn't feel overrun even in decent weather.

Families with younger kids will get a solid hour out of it before the novelty of "just trees" wears thin. Walkers heading up towards the Lake District proper should factor it in as a warm-up or cool-down ramble. History types won't find much here - it's just woodland, no castle ruins or ancient sites tucked away.

If you're based at Waterfoot Caravan Park less than a mile away, or any of the cluster around Ullswater Holiday Park, Lodge Wood is genuinely handy for a morning constitutional before heading to bigger attractions. Free to access, obviously - it's a forest. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're not hanging about, longer if you want to really potter. Go early or late to dodge school groups if that matters to you.
