Comb's Wood

A thick woodland that crowds in on you as soon as you step past the entrance - no gentle introduction here, just proper forest. Comb's Wood sits east of Stevenage and feels genuinely tucked away despite being so close to town, which is rare for Hertfordshire.

The paths wind through mature trees, mostly beech and oak, and there's enough variation to keep a decent walk interesting without needing to commit to hours. Walkers will find it satisfying - not dramatic, but the kind of place where you stop noticing the real world after fifteen minutes. Families with younger children do well here too; it's not so vast that anyone gets lost, and there's something about wandering between trees that keeps kids engaged longer than you'd expect.

What you won't find is much in the way of facilities or formal infrastructure. Come prepared for muddy stretches, especially after rain. There's no visitor centre or tearoom, so bring what you need. The wood fills perhaps an hour comfortably, maybe ninety minutes if you're properly exploring rather than just passing through.
