Completion of the Cumberland Gap

The Cumberland Gap marks the point where the Maiden Way Roman road completes its crossing through the Pennines, a feat of engineering that still feels impressive when you stand there. It's not a grand monument or visitor centre - just the landscape itself, the actual ground where Roman soldiers and traders once passed through on their way between Carlisle and the southern territories.

Walkers will get the most from this. The route itself is the attraction, following the old Roman line through moorland and fell country. You're looking at proper fell walking, the kind where the views open up and you can see exactly why the Romans chose this particular passage. It's not a quick tick-box stop - allow a few hours if you want to do it justice, longer if you're combining it with other sections of the Maiden Way.

The nearest town is Carlisle, which sits a reasonable distance north. If you're based at one of the caravan parks around the area - High Gaitle or Camelot are both within a couple of miles - you've got a genuine walking destination on your doorstep rather than just another roadside attraction. It's free, obviously, being moorland.

This isn't for people after heritage visitor experiences or gift shops. It's for those who'd rather read the landscape than a plaque. History types and serious walkers will find it rewarding. Others might find it a bit too abstract - just hills and old paths. But if you're holidaying in Cumbria and enjoy walking, it's well worth the boots.
