Coneyburrow Wood

A proper woodland walk through Sussex countryside, Coneyburrow Wood sits just outside Heathfield and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a forest in the South Downs foothills - shaded paths, birdsong, and the sort of peace that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

The wood itself isn't vast, so you're looking at a manageable outing rather than an all-day trek. Families with younger kids will do fine here, though there's not much in the way of facilities or formal attractions. It's the sort of place you go to walk, breathe, and let the children burn off energy without worrying about them wandering too far. Dogs are welcome, which counts for plenty.

Timing-wise, allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on your pace and whether you stop to sit on a log and contemplate things. Spring's lovely for bluebells if you time it right. Autumn less crowded than summer. There's no charge that we're aware of, and no café or visitor centre, so bring your own water.

For a park holiday in the area, it pairs well with Horam Manor Country Park just down the road - fifteen minutes' drive at most. Dernwood Farm Glamping is even closer if you're staying there. The wood works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere, or an evening stroll after a day at one of the bigger attractions. It won't dominate your itinerary, but it's the sort of place that makes a weekend feel properly rural.
