Coneygar Wood

Walking into Coneygar Wood feels like stepping back about fifty years. The trees are proper old here - tall beech and oak that create a tunnel of green even in summer - and the paths wind through in a way that makes you genuinely lose track of time. There's no visitor centre, no café, no signs telling you what bird that was. Just woodland as it should be.

It's the sort of place where families with kids over seven will actually want to be, since younger ones tend to lose interest once the novelty of "trees" wears off after twenty minutes. Walkers absolutely thrive here though. The network of trails means you can do anything from a quick twenty-minute loop to a proper two-hour ramble depending on how deep you want to go. Bring proper boots in winter - it gets boggy.

The wood sits between Swindon and the Cotswolds, which makes it useful rather than spectacular. It's not a destination in itself, but if you're based at Great Farm or Second Chance just up the road, it's a solid option for stretching your legs without driving somewhere else. Go mid-week if you can - weekends pull in the local crowd and it loses some of its quiet appeal. Free to walk, obviously. Allow an hour minimum, three hours if you're taking it slowly and stopping to listen to the silence.
