Coneygear Park

The River Great Ouse winds through this modest nature reserve just outside Huntingdon, and if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Huntingdon Boathaven is practically on the doorstep - it's worth a morning wander. Coneygear Park isn't a manicured attraction with visitor facilities and a gift shop. It's a working nature reserve where locals come to spot kingfishers, watch for dragonflies in summer, and walk the riverside paths without crowds.

The appeal is straightforward: open water, mature trees, and the kind of quiet you don't get in town. Birdwatchers will find it rewarding, particularly in spring migration season. Families with young children might manage an hour here before restlessness sets in - the paths are flat and accessible, but there's no playground or tearoom to break things up. Older kids who like to spot wildlife will get more from it.

Access is free, though details on formal opening hours are thin on the ground - treat it as a dawn-to-dusk site. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a proper loop. The reserve works well as a morning stop between Huntingdon town centre and somewhere like Grafham Water, which has better facilities and more to do if you're after a full day out.
