Corfe Common

Corfe Common is a proper slice of Dorset heathland that most visitors miss entirely, which is precisely why it's worth the detour from Wareham. The reserve sits on open ground where you can actually see for miles across the heath - gorse, heather, and rough grassland stretching out with Corfe Castle visible in the distance on a clear day. It's the sort of place where you might spot adders sunbathing on the paths or hear the grasshoppers clicking away in summer, and birdwatchers make pilgrimages here for the hobby birds that favour this habitat.

Walking is what you do here. There are no facilities, no cafe, no interpretive signs explaining what you're looking at - just you and the landscape. Most people can cover the main circuit in 90 minutes without pushing, though you'll want longer if you're stopping to watch wildlife or just sitting on a patch of heather doing nothing much at all. It's free to visit, which is rather excellent.

Families with kids over eight will find it engaging; younger ones might get restless without a defined destination. It's the sort of place that reveals itself to patient walkers and nature types rather than casual strollers. The Woodyhyde Campsite sits barely a mile away, making it a natural morning walk from your pitch. Swanage Bay View and West Holme Glamping are close enough too if you're basing yourself that way - you could comfortably work it into a broader Purbeck exploration alongside Corfe Castle itself.
