West Man

The walk up West Man rewards you with proper views across Dorset's heathland - it's one of those peaks that doesn't announce itself loudly but punches above its weight once you're up there. From Wareham, you're looking at a straightforward hike that takes the better part of an afternoon, depending on your pace and how much time you want to spend standing about taking photos.

What you get is a decent vantage point over the Purbeck landscape, the kind of spot where the light changes everything about twenty minutes before sunset. It's not a scramble or anything technical - more a proper moorland walk with enough elevation to feel like you've earned it. The heathland itself is the real draw here, especially if you're into native plants or just want somewhere quiet without the tourist crowds you'd hit at Durdle Door or Old Harry Rocks.

This works well as part of a broader Dorset walking itinerary. Base yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Woodyhyde is closest at under three miles, or Burnbake Forest Lodges if you want something a touch more comfortable - and you can easily combine West Man with the rest of the Purbeck walking network. The landscape here is genuinely good walking country, the kind where you can spend days without repeating yourself.

Bring decent boots. The heathland gets boggy in patches, and there's no shelter up top once the weather turns. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light and fewer people. Worth the trip if you're already in the area, though don't expect a café or facilities at the summit.
