Corton Woods Nature Reserve

The woodland here is proper Norfolk - flat, quiet, and full of birds if you know when to look. Corton Woods Nature Reserve sits just east of Lowestoft and offers exactly what it says: a chance to walk through native woodland without fighting crowds or paying entry fees. The trails wind through mature trees with patches of scrub and grassland that attract everything from woodpeckers to migrating warblers depending on the season. It's the kind of place where you notice things - a flash of movement, the sound of a great spotted woodpecker, the way light filters through the canopy.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from this. Bring binoculars in spring and autumn when migratory birds pass through; the reserves along this stretch of Norfolk coast are genuinely significant for that. Families with young kids might find it a bit limiting - there's not much in the way of facilities or dramatic features, just trees and footpaths. Allow an hour or so unless you're seriously into spotting.

Free access and no reported gates make it a proper bonus if you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Azure Seas and Broadland Sands are practically on your doorstep. It's not a day trip destination on its own, but as part of a Norfolk coastal break, it fills the gap nicely on a quieter morning before heading to the beach or into Lowestoft proper.
