Cottage Wood

Walking into Cottage Wood feels like stepping back a few centuries. This is proper old-growth woodland just outside Hereford - the kind of place where the canopy is so thick you could almost believe the world beyond has disappeared. The paths wind through ancient oaks and beeches, and on a damp morning the whole forest smells like wet earth and moss.

It's genuinely good for families with younger kids who like exploring without needing a destination at the end. There's enough woodland to poke around in for an hour or two without it becoming a full day's hike. Older children might find it a bit samey unless they're into spotting woodland birds or collecting interesting fungi. Dog walkers absolutely love it here.

There's no entrance fee and no strict opening hours that I'm aware of - it's the kind of place you just turn up to. Allow an hour minimum, two if you're the type to stop and listen to birdsong. The ground can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

If you're basing yourselves at Kingfisher Meadow or any of the other parks dotted around the Hereford area, Cottage Wood makes an easy morning or afternoon filler between bigger attractions. It won't set your heart racing, but it's the sort of walk that quietly clears your head. Worth the detour if you're in the neighbourhood and fancy something low-key.
