The River Wye cuts a lazy curve around this ancient cathedral city, where cattle markets have operated for centuries and the smell of hops still drifts from local breweries. Hereford feels properly provincial in the best way - not sleepy, just unhurried.

Hereford Cathedral dominates the skyline, home to the famous Mappa Mundi and chained library. But beyond the obvious tourist draws, there's plenty to keep you busy. Venture just outside the city limits and you're deep in Herefordshire's rolling countryside. Sutton Walls reveals fascinating Iron Age earthworks - a proper archaeological site rather than just another field with a plaque. The surrounding woodlands like Spendle's Green and Londonderry Wood offer decent walking without the crowds you'd get in the Cotswolds.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The A49 runs straight through from the M50, and there's a direct train line from Birmingham. It's close enough to Wales for day trips to the Brecon Beacons, yet far enough from major cities to feel authentically rural.
