Cove Mtn

Standing at 455 metres, this Mourne Mountain summit offers proper views across County Down without the crowds you'll find on Slieve Donard. The climb from Newcastle takes about two hours each way through heather moorland and granite outcrops, with the final push being fairly steep but manageable for anyone reasonably fit.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Cove Mountain - the panoramic views stretch from the Irish Sea to the rolling countryside inland. Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will find it rewarding, though toddlers won't cope with the rough terrain and distance.

Best tackled on clear days when you can actually see the coastline properly. Early morning starts mean fewer people and often better light for photos. The mountain sits within the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you're walking through some of Northern Ireland's finest landscape.

Campers staying at nearby Tollymore Forest Park or Bloody Bridge Campsite can easily tackle this as a day hike. The proximity to Newcastle makes it convenient for those based at Windsor Holiday Park or Woodcroft Caravan Park too. Allow a full day including rest stops and lunch at the summit - rushing this walk rather defeats the point of being up there.
