Coverwell Coppice

The woodland at Coverwell Coppice is proper old-growth forest - the sort of place where you actually feel like you've stepped away from things rather than just wandered into a municipal park. It's near Weymouth, tucked into Dorset's quieter corners, and the trees here have clearly been left to do their thing for a good while.

What you get is straightforward: woodland walking through established coppice with a real sense of quiet. The paths wind through mixed broadleaf, and if you're into spotting birds or just listening to the absence of traffic, this delivers. It's not dramatic like a coastal walk, and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, but that's rather the point. Locals come here to think, not to tick boxes.

It works best for walkers who want woodland without the crowds. Families with younger kids might find it a bit flat after forty minutes - there's no views, no water features, no obvious excitement. Older children who like rambling will be fine. You could easily combine this with a beach visit or a walk around Waterside or Chesil Beach Holiday Park if you're staying nearby - both are less than five miles away. If you're camped at either of those, this could be your morning stretch-the-legs stop before heading to the seafront.

Go early or in autumn. The place feels better when you're not sharing it with everyone else, and the light through the leaves in September is genuinely lovely. Free access, no set hours that anyone's made public - it's the sort of place you just turn up to.
