Cowley Copse

Cowley Copse is a modest woodland patch near Thatcham that won't demand much of your time but rewards a quiet wander if you're in the area. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong without the A-road hum - quite rare in Berkshire, honestly. The trees are mixed deciduous, nothing dramatic, but on an overcast afternoon the light filtering through feels proper restorative.

This is walker territory, mainly. Families with young children might manage a quick circuit, though there's no playground or facilities to speak of. The main appeal is simple: a genuine bit of woodland where you can shake off the kettle-induced lethargy of a park holiday. If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road, it's a fifteen-minute drive and worth combining with a longer ramble in the Ken Wood area rather than treating it as a destination itself.

There's no entrance fee or visitor centre - just pull in quietly and go. Best visited on a weekday morning when it's genuinely peaceful. An hour is plenty. It's not transformative, but it does what it says: gives you trees and space. The sort of place locals actually use rather than somewhere geared up for tourists, which is rather nice. If you're the type who finds a wood more restorative than a theme park, this will do the job.
