Penclose Copse

The woodland around Penclose Copse near Thatcham is proper old-school Berkshire forest - dense enough to feel like you've actually left civilization behind, but close enough that you're never more than twenty minutes from a decent cup of tea. This isn't some manicured country estate woodland with numbered trails and interpretation boards. It's the real thing: beech and oak mix, proper forest floor, the kind of place where you actually notice when the seasons change.

Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding. The paths meander through the trees without feeling forced, and there's enough variation to keep it interesting for a solid hour or two. Families with kids aged eight and up will get something from it - younger children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; you'll hear more than you see, but that's half the appeal.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that we can track down, so come prepared. It's free to access, and there's no obvious time restriction, though obviously you'll want daylight hours. Late autumn and early spring are when it really comes alive - less bracken underfoot, better visibility, and far fewer people.

If you're based at Rhodeside Caravan Club or Lorne Hill Farm nearby, this makes an excellent morning escape before heading to bigger attractions. It won't dominate your holiday, but it's the sort of place you'll actually remember - proper woodland without the fuss.
