Cowshill Cave

A short walk from Lydney, Cowshill Cave sits tucked into a wooded valley - the kind of place that feels properly removed from the everyday. It's a modest natural cavern, nothing that'll take your breath away with cathedral-like proportions, but that's rather the point. You get a genuine sense of exploring rather than filing past a tourist attraction.

The cave itself is free to visit and takes about twenty minutes to have a proper look around, though the walk there and back will add another half hour depending on your pace. It's best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged - spring or autumn tend to work well. The approach is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though it's muddy underfoot and not somewhere to take toddlers expecting a smooth stroll.

What makes it worthwhile is the feeling of discovery. There are a few impressive rock formations and the cave has enough history to make you wonder who stood here centuries ago. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of curiosity rather than demanding it.

If you're camping at Forest and Wye Valley or one of the other sites within a few miles of Lydney, Cowshill works as a decent half-day excursion between longer walks in the Forest of Dean. Don't expect crowds or facilities - bring a torch, wear decent boots, and accept that it's a low-key spot. Perfect if you want something real rather than polished.
