Cox's Island

Floating quietly on the River Avon between Stratford-upon-Avon and Welford-on-Avon, this small nature reserve sits like a green comma in the waterway. What strikes you first is how peaceful it feels, despite being barely a mile from Shakespeare's birthplace. The island supports a lovely mix of riverside vegetation and provides a proper sanctuary for water birds - I spotted moorhens, kingfishers and the odd heron during my visit.

Access is the thing here. You'll need to approach by boat or kayak, which makes it feel properly remote even though you're so close to town. The walking is limited once you're there - it's more about sitting quietly and watching the river life unfold around you.

Families with young children might find it a bit restrictive, but anyone who enjoys gentle wildlife watching will appreciate the tranquillity. Bring binoculars if you have them. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best when the birds are most active.
