Crag Intake Plantation

Walking into Crag Intake Plantation feels like stepping into proper woodland - tall conifers overhead, a carpet of needles underfoot, and enough quiet to actually hear birdsong. It's a working forest rather than a manicured park, which is exactly why it works. The plantation sits just outside Ambleside and makes for a solid hour or two of forest walking, especially if you fancy a break from the Lake District's more crowded fell paths.

You'll find a decent network of trails threading through the trees, with enough elevation gain to feel like proper exercise without being punishing. The views open up in places, giving you glimpses back towards the valley. It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe - no crowds, no scrambling over rocks with a hundred other people.

Walkers will appreciate this far more than casual strollers. Kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. Bring proper footwear because it gets muddy in patches, especially after rain. The ground can be uneven, so it's not ideal for buggies.

If you're staying at Park Cliffe or Hill of Oaks - both decent enough parks a few miles away - this makes a proper morning or afternoon excursion. It works particularly well as a quieter alternative to the busier lakeside walks around Windermere. Free to access, no hassle with car parks or admission fees.
