Ambleside

Steam boats chug across Windermere while walkers pound the fells above this famous Lake District hub. Ambleside sits at the northern tip of England's largest natural lake, a proper mountain town where outdoor gear shops outnumber cafes and muddy boots are standard footwear year-round.

The town centre pulses with energy, especially weekends when half of Manchester seems to descend. But venture beyond the busy streets and you'll find why this place has drawn adventurers for centuries. Tom Ghyll Waterfalls tumble down the hillside just minutes from the high street, while the iconic Steam Yacht Gondola offers a gentler way to appreciate the lake's grandeur.

Fell walkers have endless options. Little Fell provides a decent warm-up scramble, but the serious stuff lies further out - Carron Crag and Ivy Crag offer proper challenges with cracking views as reward. The network of ancient woodlands like Guards Wood and Christle Wood make for lovely lower-level walks when the weather's grim up top.

Getting here's straightforward enough. The A591 winds up from Kendal, though it can be a right crawl in summer. No railway, but buses connect from Windermere station regularly. Parking in town is murder during peak season - another reason the nearby holiday parks make sense.

Staying at one of the parks around Skelwith or Langdale puts you perfectly placed for both the high fells and the lake itself. You'll dodge the worst of the town traffic while keeping easy access to Ambleside's shops and the broader Lake District beyond.
