The Wychwood Forest around Burford feels properly ancient, and Cranes sits right in the thick of it - a working woodland that's been harvested for centuries. You're walking through dense broadleaf trees, mainly oak and beech, with the occasional clearing where you catch your breath and remember why you came. It's not a manicured nature reserve with signboards at every turn; this is the real thing, where foresters still work and the paths shift with the seasons.

The appeal here is straightforward. Walkers get a decent network of trails ranging from gentle loops to proper woodland stomps, all without crowds. Families with primary-school kids will manage fine on the shorter routes, though toddlers might struggle with muddier stretches after rain. History types will appreciate that you're walking through land managed for timber since medieval times - there's weight to that. The forest itself is the attraction; you're not coming for a visitor centre or café. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent walk, or an hour for a quick wander.

Free access, though it pays to check conditions before turning up - waterlogged paths are common in winter. The nearby Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is barely half a mile away, making this perfect for a park holiday when you want proper woodland without the tourist polish. Wysdom Touring Park, two miles out, gives you more space if you're after something less busy. Both put you close enough to explore Burford's high street in the afternoon without much fuss.
