Cransley Reservoir

The water at Cransley stretches out flat and grey under most skies, surrounded by the sort of Northamptonshire countryside that doesn't announce itself loudly. It's a working reservoir, not a theme park, and that's precisely why people come back to it. You can walk the perimeter - takes a good hour and a half depending on pace - and spot the usual suspects: cormorants, grebes, the odd heron if you're lucky and quiet about it. Birdwatchers rate it highly. The surrounding grassland gets muddy after rain, so proper boots are non-negotiable. There's a car park near Kettering that costs next to nothing, though opening times and seasonal restrictions do apply, so ring ahead before making the journey. The reservoir works best as part of a quieter park holiday rather than the main event. If you're staying at Lakeview Caravan Park just up the road - barely a mile away - you've got an easy walk for mornings when the light's decent. Moon Valley Glamping, further out near Desborough, makes for a nice base too if you fancy something with a bit more space around you. This isn't dramatic landscape. It won't take your breath away. But on a decent morning, when the water's calm and the light's right, it's a proper place to think, or simply to watch birds that don't care you're there.
