Thorpe Malsor Reservoir

The water at Thorpe Malsor sits dark and still, ringed by scrubland and the kind of quiet you don't often find near Kettering. It's a working reservoir, not a beauty spot dressed up for tourists, which means it operates by its own rules - access can be limited depending on what the water company's up to on any given day.

What you get here is straightforward: a decent walk around the perimeter if access permits, decent birdwatching in winter when migrating species arrive, and the kind of unremarkable English landscape that somehow works better for being unremarkable. No café, no visitor centre, no car park with an ice cream van. Just water, fields, and the occasional angler.

This is territory for walkers comfortable with basic facilities and people who've got binoculars already in the boot. Families might find it a bit dull unless the kids are genuinely into ornithology. The nearest accommodation - Lakeview Caravan Park is barely a mile away - makes it easy enough to stay local, though you'd be cycling around the reservoir rather than actually getting on the water.

Timing matters. Go in spring or autumn and you'll see actual wildlife movement. Summer is fairly dead. Always check ahead with the water authority about access before making the trip; I've heard of people turning up only to find the gates closed for maintenance. It's a proper spot if you know what you're after, but don't expect the kind of day out that keeps everyone happy for six hours.
