Craven Wood

Walk into Craven Wood and you're immediately swallowed by beech and oak - proper forest, the kind where mobile signal disappears and you remember why you came to Gloucestershire in the first place. It's a decent-sized woodland just outside Cheltenham, with well-trodden paths that wind through the trees without demanding map-reading skills or fell boots.

The wood itself is straightforward: you're here to walk, to breathe in the damp earth smell, maybe spot a deer if you're lucky. There's no visitor centre or tea room, no entrance fee as far as anyone can tell. Just trees, paths, and the sound of your own footsteps. Most people will spend an hour to ninety minutes wandering through - enough to feel properly away from it all without turning it into a full-day mission.

Families with young children will find it manageable, though it's not a play-park situation. Serious walkers might find the trails a touch short, but as a break between exploring Cheltenham and the broader Cotswolds, it works well. Spring brings bluebells; autumn turns it all gold and copper.
