Cream Gorse

The woodland around Cream Gorse isn't dramatic or showstopping, but it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander. You're looking at mixed forest - the kind with actual paths rather than scrambling through bracken - set just outside Chippenham in north Wiltshire. It's quiet, genuinely quiet, which counts for something these days.

What you get here is straightforward: trees, fresh air, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife if you're lucky. No visitor centre, no facilities, no faffing about. The walks are gentle enough for families with younger kids, though they'll get bored if you spend more than an hour here. This isn't a destination in itself - it's a solid addition to a day out exploring the area.

If you're based at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park or Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm, both within easy reach, Cream Gorse slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading to Chippenham for lunch. The nearest proper attraction of note is Lacock Abbey about eight miles south, so you could easily string a few things together.

Best visited autumn or spring when the light's decent and you're not battling midge season. Don't expect anything Instagram-worthy - just honest woodland that's free and accessible. It does what it says on the tin.
