Crick Canal Tunnel South

The Grand Union Canal disappears underground here at Crick, and it's genuinely quite something to stand at the entrance and watch the waterway vanish into the tunnel mouth. Built in 1876, this 1,528-yard passage was a major feat of Victorian engineering - they had to dig through solid rock, and the whole thing is lined with brick. You can't walk through it (it's still an active canal), but walking along the towpath on either side gives you a real sense of the scale.

It works best for canal enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates a bit of industrial history. Kids might find the tunnel entrance itself interesting for ten minutes, but they won't be gripped for long unless they're already into boating or engineering. The towpath is accessible and relatively flat, so it's a gentle walk rather than a proper hike.

Lutterworth is the nearest town, just a few miles away, and there are several caravan and camping spots within easy reach - Caravan Park at Stanford Hall and Manor Farm are both close by if you're basing yourself in the area. Free to visit, no set opening times. Allow twenty minutes to properly look around and walk part of the towpath. It's worth combining with other canal walks in the region rather than making a special journey. Honestly, if you're staying at one of the local parks, it's a decent excuse to get out and stretch your legs, but don't expect it to be a day's entertainment on its own.
