John Wycliffe, the 14th-century religious reformer, was rector here - though it's the Percy Pilcher Monument that really catches the eye. This Victorian pioneer crashed his flying machine on nearby Stanford Hall's grounds in 1899, just four years before the Wright brothers took off.

The town centre feels proper English market town - a wide high street that's seen better days but still has character. St Nicholas church anchors one end, while independent shops and the odd chain fill the Georgian and Victorian buildings. It's quiet midweek, livelier on Saturdays.

Stanford Hall itself is the real draw. This Palladian mansion, still family-owned, opens select days and houses fascinating collections including early motorcycles and that aviation connection. The grounds stretch down to Stanford Reservoir, where you can walk the perimeter or try your luck with the fishing.

Cracks Hill offers the best views in the area - a proper climb but worth it for panoramas across three counties. The viewpoint plaque marks the spot where you can see forever on clear days. Down in the valley, both Crick Marina and Yelvertoft Marina serve the Grand Union Canal, bringing narrow boat traffic and waterside pubs.

Getting here is straightforward - M1 junction 18 is minutes away, making this ideal for park stays. The M6 junction 1 is even closer. Rugby's the nearest proper town, about 20 minutes east. Several parks dot the countryside around Lutterworth, from simple touring pitches to glamping options, all perfectly placed for exploring both the town's quiet charms and the broader Leicestershire countryside that rolls away in every direction.
