Croft Ambrey Hillfort

The Iron Age fortifications at Croft Ambrey rise sharply from the Herefordshire landscape, their defensive ditches and ramparts still commanding the ridge after two millennia. You're looking at a proper hillfort - the kind where ancient people chose terrain so steep you understand immediately why they picked it.

The walk up takes twenty minutes or so depending on fitness. It's not a gentle stroll. It's free and there's no gate or opening hours to worry about - you simply turn up. Allow an hour to do it justice, maybe longer if you're the type to sit at the top with a thermos and a map.
