The smell hits you first when you walk into Cromarty Brewing Company - that sharp, grassy hop aroma that tells you immediately this is a working operation, not some polished visitor attraction. It's the real thing. Based in the Highland village of Cromarty, about five miles from Fortrose, this independent brewery lets you see exactly how Scottish craft beer gets made, from the grain to the glass.

You can watch the brewers at work during weekday visits (Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm), which means you're actually catching the place in action rather than wandering round a museum exhibit. The brewery is small and genuinely welcoming - owners who actually know their product and talk you through what's happening. If you're after the clinical, corporate brewery tour experience, this isn't it. What you get instead is honest conversation about why they do things the way they do.

This works brilliantly if you're into beer or curious about the craft side of brewing. History enthusiasts won't find much here beyond the beer itself. Kids will get bored unless they're teenagers with a genuine interest in the process. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if the owner's in the mood to chat.

Stay at Fortrose Bay Campsite or Newmore Highland Pods nearby, both excellent bases for exploring the Black Isle. The brewery fits neatly into a Highland holiday - proper local, unpretentious, and proof that Scotland's craft beer scene goes way beyond the tourist tier.
