Dalcross Chambered Cairn

The stones have been standing on this Highland hillside for over 4,500 years, and walking up to Dalcross Chambered Cairn feels properly timeless. It's an Iron Age burial monument - basically a massive pile of rocks with a chamber inside where ancient people left their dead. You won't find tourist infrastructure or explanatory plaques here; it's just you, the landscape, and a sense that you're touching something genuinely old.

The site sits near Fortrose, a small coastal town that makes a decent base for exploring the Black Isle. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though the final approach can be a bit boggy depending on weather. Allow 45 minutes return if you're taking your time. Archaeologists reckon the cairn was built around 3500 BC, which puts it in perspective - this was standing long before the Romans showed up in Britain.

It's worth the detour if you're into prehistory or stone circles. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after ten minutes - there's no climbing on it, no interactive bits, just rocks and views over the Moray Firth. But if you're the type who gets excited by unexcavated Bronze Age mysteries, you'll love it.

Stay at Ardtower Caravan Park or Fortrose Bay Campsite nearby and you can combine this with coastal walks and whatever else the Black Isle offers. Free to visit, naturally. Go early in the day if you want decent light for photographs.
