Crookacre Plantation

There's something properly restorative about walking into Crookacre Plantation on the outskirts of Richmond. It's a proper working forest - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, with mature trees creating a green cathedral overhead and the ground soft underfoot with decades of needles and leaf litter.

The woodland trails wind through a mix of conifers and broadleaves, and it's the kind of place that rewards a slow meander rather than a rushed circuit. You won't find much in the way of interpretation boards or facilities - this is a working plantation, not a manicured country park - but that's rather the point. Walkers and families with older kids who like a proper tramp through the trees will get real value from an hour or two here. Younger children might find it a bit samey after the first half hour, mind you.

Access appears unrestricted, though I'd always check locally before heading out, as forestry operations can occasionally affect access. The beauty is that it's free and requires minimal planning - no gift shop, no car park fees, just a genuine slice of North Yorkshire woodland.
