Croome Court

The first thing that strikes you about Croome Court is how understated it all is. No grand gates, no crowds - just an 18th-century country house that Robert Adam designed for the 6th Earl of Coventry, sitting quietly in its landscape a few miles south of Worcester. You're looking at proper Georgian architecture here, the sort of building that whispers rather than shouts about its pedigree.

Inside, the rooms flow like something from a Regency novel - Adam's plasterwork is exceptional, and the library alone justifies the visit if you care about period detail. The grounds are what really draw you though. Lancelot Capability Brown designed the park, and it's the kind of landscape that makes you understand why he was the best in the business. Rolling lawns, a lake, woodland walks - it unfolds as you move through it rather than announcing itself all at once.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Children might find an hour enough unless they're keen on either grand houses or the park itself - there's no play area or café to anchor a longer stay. Families based at Rockridge Farm Campsite or Bredon View Holiday Park Estate are well-positioned; it's a short drive and genuinely worth carving out an afternoon for.

Go in late spring when the rhododendrons are out, or autumn when you've got the place almost to yourself. It's the sort of visit that sticks with you - not because it's showy, but because everything about it is done properly.
