Cross Hallows Plantation

The woodland at Cross Hallows feels genuinely quiet in a way that's getting rarer. You're deep enough into Northumberland to lose the sound of traffic, but close enough to Hexham that it's not a proper expedition - perhaps twenty minutes' drive at most.

What you get is a proper forest walk through coniferous woodland, the kind where the ground is soft with needles and the air smells like resin. It's straightforward walking rather than dramatic scenery - no sudden vistas or dramatic drops. Families with younger children will manage it fine; there's room to let kids run ahead without losing sight of them entirely.

The plantation has that stripped-back quality of working forestry land rather than a manicured country estate. It's honest, which some people find refreshing and others find a bit dull depending on what they're after. If you're coming from Sycamore Glamping Pods up the road, it's convenient for a morning walk before breakfast or a late afternoon stretch without needing to plan around anything formal.

Allow an hour or so if you're taking it slowly. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Go when it's been dry - it can get muddy and churned up after rain. It works best as part of a broader Hexham-area trip rather than a destination in itself, but if you're staying locally and want a straightforward woodland walk, it does the job without fuss.
