Crown Meadow

The meadow sits just outside Bridgnorth, a proper working landscape rather than some manicured nature reserve with information boards every fifty paces. Walk through here in spring and the wildflowers are genuinely worth the trip - orchids, fritillaries, the lot. Summer's quieter but the bird life picks up; you'll spot buzzards and the occasional red kite if you're lucky.

It's essentially a chance to see what the Shropshire countryside looked like before intensive farming took over. Flat, boggy in places, with old hedgerows running through it. Takes about an hour to walk the main loop, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping regularly to look at things. No facilities that I could find, so bring water and sensible footwear - the ground can be surprisingly soft.

This works best for serious walkers and birders rather than families with young kids. The appeal is quiet and understated; if you're after dramatic views or obvious attractions, you'll be disappointed. But if you want to understand the actual ecology of the area while you're staying at somewhere like Stanmore Hall or Hay & Hedgerow, this does the job nicely. The surrounding parks are all within easy reach of Bridgnorth's better bits - the castle, the high street, the river - so you can combine a morning here with proper sightseeing in town. Entry should be free, though best to check locally before you go since information online is thin.
