Cruach nan Duarman

You won't find crowds at Cruach nan Duarman. This modest hill rising above Tarbert in Argyll offers one of those walks that feels properly remote even when civilisation isn't far away. The peak itself sits at a decent height without being a mountaineering project, making it accessible to anyone with reasonable legs and a decent pair of boots.

The actual ascent is straightforward - rough ground, some heather, and the sort of path that appears and disappears depending on how many walkers have been through recently. What makes it worthwhile is the view across the Kintyre peninsula and down towards the Clyde. On a clear day you get a sense of why folk fought over this patch of Argyll. Visibility can be rubbish though, so don't bank on it.

The walk takes roughly two hours return depending on your pace and how much time you spend at the top. Solo walkers and experienced families will get the most from it - it's not a pushchair-friendly stroll, and younger kids might find it a bit of a slog without proper motivation. Tarbert itself is the obvious base, though Port Ban Holiday Park nearby is well-positioned if you're doing a longer stay in the area.

Go early to avoid what little traffic there is, bring a map because phone signal is patchy, and don't expect facilities at the summit. It's the sort of walk you do because you want to move your legs and think straight, not because Instagram told you to.
