Cusworth Hall

An 18th-century country house on the outskirts of Doncaster that's been converted into a proper museum - all period rooms, local history, and the kind of place where you can actually wander through how Georgian gentry lived without feeling talked at. The house itself is the main draw: ornate plasterwork, original furniture, and windows that look out over the parkland. Downstairs they've done the domestic stuff well - kitchens, servants' quarters - which tends to interest people more than endless drawing rooms.

Walking families get the most from this one. Allow two hours to do it justice without rushing, though you could stretch it to three if you're reading all the panels. The grounds are pleasant enough for a stroll after, though nothing spectacular. Kids aged seven upwards will engage with it; younger ones might flag after the first floor.

It's free entry, which is worth knowing. Tuesdays and Wednesdays mornings are quieter if you prefer fewer people drifting around. The location works well if you're basing yourself at Sunnyview Touring Park nearby - it's only a short drive, making it a solid half-day outing. The café serves decent enough tea and cake, and the gift shop has the usual museum fare.

Not a destination in itself unless you're serious about Georgian houses, but absolutely worth the detour if you're spending a week in South Yorkshire. It fills an afternoon properly without feeling like a slog.
