Dafen Park

The Afan Nedd Woodland Park, as locals know it, sits just outside Llanelli and offers a proper escape into South Wales' industrial heritage mixed with genuine nature. What you're actually looking at is a reclaimed colliery site - the kind of place where pit wheels once turned and miners hauled coal from underground. Now it's woodland, grassland, and wetland that's slowly reclaiming the landscape, which sounds dull until you're actually walking it and spotting the old structures poking through the trees.

It's excellent for walkers who want something more interesting than a loop round a tame park. The trails weave through different habitats - you'll pass old mining remnants, ponds that attract water birds, and patches of native woodland that feel properly wild for South Wales. History enthusiasts will find the industrial archaeology genuinely interesting rather than sanitised. Kids won't be overwhelmed - there's enough novelty in the ruins and water features to hold their attention for an hour or two, though it's not a destination in itself.

The whole thing is free, which is the way it should be. Allow two to three hours if you're doing more than a quick stroll. It works well as a morning activity before or after staying at South Wales Touring Park or Gateway Resort, both barely two miles away near Llanelli. You won't queue or fight crowds, which is the real win. Go on a weekday if possible - weekends bring school groups and the place loses some of its peace. Better in spring or autumn when the woodland's doing something interesting.
