Dallas Dhu Historic Distillery

A defunct whisky distillery frozen in time - that's Dallas Dhu, sitting just outside Forres in Aberdeenshire. What you get is the real deal: working stills, copper pipes, fermentation vessels, all arranged exactly as they were when production stopped in 1983. You walk through genuine production rooms, not some sanitized visitor centre mock-up.

The place appeals most to whisky enthusiasts and industrial heritage buffs, though families with kids aged eight and up will find enough to occupy an hour or so. The stills are genuinely impressive - massive copper affairs that dominated the workspace for over a century. You can see how the whole operation fitted together, from the grain stores through to the bottling line.

It's free to poke around the exterior and grounds, which is perfectly pleasant. The interior tours depend on staffing, so ring ahead before you trek out. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking a guided walk, otherwise forty minutes does the job. Summer's the best bet for opening hours consistency.
