Dalmadilly Ponds

Two shallow pools sit on moorland just outside Inverurie, and they're genuinely worth a detour if you're after a gentle walk rather than a dramatic Highland vista. The ponds themselves are unremarkable - they're basically man-made water features, possibly former quarry workings - but the surrounding terrain is lovely, with open views across Aberdeenshire's rolling country.

Walkers will get the most from Dalmadilly. There's no formal trail, but you can potter around the water's edge, and on a clear day you can see for miles across the Highlands. Birdwatchers sometimes find interest here, though I'd manage expectations - it's not a nature reserve. Kids might manage twenty minutes if the ducks are active, but this isn't a destination in itself.

The real value comes if you're based at Hillhead Caravan Park, barely two and a half miles away. It's a solid spot for a morning walk before heading into Inverurie proper for proper shops and coffee. Admission is free and there are no opening hours to speak of - just turn up during daylight.

Bit steep is the path down to the water in places, so wear decent shoes. Allow thirty minutes if you're just having a look, maybe an hour if you're a lingerer. Worth the drive from Inverurie? Only if you're already in the area. As a standalone attraction, it's underwhelming. As a bonus leg-stretch during a caravan holiday, it does the job.
