Dalwhinnie Distillery

The Dalwhinnie Distillery sits at 326 metres above sea level, making it Scotland's highest distillery - and you feel that altitude the moment you arrive on the A9 corridor between Newtonmore and the Cairngorms. The whisky here is light, floral, and genuinely different because of where it's made. Cold air, fast water, isolation - they all matter.

You get a proper tour round the working distillery, seeing the copper stills and learning how barley becomes something worth drinking. The whole experience takes a couple of hours if you do it properly, and they've got a tasting room where the dram at the end actually tastes better because you understand what went into it. Not theatre - proper whisky making.

It's absolutely worth the stop if you're driving the A9, especially if you're into single malts or Scottish distillery tourism. Less polished than Speyside's bigger names, which is partly the appeal. Families with teenagers who've got any interest in how things are made will find it engaging. Young kids might find the process dull, though the gift shop usually keeps them occupied.

The distillery visit fits neatly into a day that includes walking or visiting nearby Cairngorm attractions. Bring a camera for the views across the moorland, and check opening times before you go - it's not a drop-in kind of place.
