Dan-yr-allt Wood

The woodland path into Dan-yr-allt Wood drops steeply from the edge of Llandovery, which means you're away from the town noise within minutes. It's proper steep at first - proper steep - but the trees close in quickly and you forget you're anywhere near civilization.

Once you're in, it's the sort of place where you can just wander. The paths are well-maintained enough that you won't need a machete, but wild enough that it doesn't feel manicured. Bluebells if you time it right in spring. Ferns everywhere. The Afon Bran runs through it, and there are spots where you can sit by the water without feeling like you're on display.

It works best for walkers who want something proper rather than a Sunday stroll. Older kids will get something out of it - there's enough to explore, enough trees to feel like you're on an expedition. Younger ones might lose interest once the novelty of trees wears off, which could be sooner than you'd like.

The wood is free to access and you can spend anywhere from an hour to a proper afternoon in here depending on how many side paths you fancy. It's the sort of place that pairs well with a stay at Erwlon or Riverside Pods - both literally on your doorstep - and gives you the outdoor stuff without needing to drive far. If you're based at Barons Court, it's still only ten minutes or so.
