Dargues Roman camp

You'll need proper walking boots and a decent map to make sense of Dargues. This Roman camp sits in the raw Northumbrian countryside south-west of Newcastle, and what you're looking at are earthworks - stone foundations, ditches, the ghost of a fort that housed soldiers nearly two thousand years ago. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. Just the landscape itself.

The remains are substantial enough that you can actually trace the fort's outline on the ground. Walk the perimeter and you start to feel how the Romans thought about defence and space. It's the kind of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts or anyone with a genuine interest in Roman Britain - casual tourists will likely find it underwhelming, to be honest. Kids under ten will get bored within twenty minutes.

Allow an hour if you're going to do it properly, longer if you're photographing or sketching. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though the site has no formal facilities. Go in late spring or early autumn when the ground's dry and the light's kind. Winter can be bleak out here.
