Northumberland National Park

The Cheviot Hills dominate the horizon here, rolling north toward Scotland with a raw, windswept beauty that catches you off guard. Northumberland National Park sprawls across 400 square miles of moorland, forest, and fell - it's one of England's quieter national parks, which means you won't fight crowds to appreciate it.

What you're actually doing here depends entirely on your legs. Walkers come for the Pennine Way, which cuts through the park, or the gentler riverside paths along the Coquet and North Tyne. The Cheviot itself demands proper fitness - it's a proper slog to the 2,674-foot summit, but the views west into Scotland make it worthwhile. Families will find easier terrain around Kielder Water to the north, though that's technically just outside the park boundary.

History buffs get more than fell views. Hadrian's Wall threads through the southern section, and you can walk stretches of it without feeling like you're on a coach tour. There are Roman forts here too, though you'll need to know where to look.

You won't find visitor centres handing out leaflets - this isn't that kind of park. What you get instead is genuine wilderness within reach of Newcastle, about an hour's drive north. Spring through autumn is peak time, though October light here is properly special. Allow a full day minimum if you're serious about it, half a day if you're just passing through from nearby glamping sites like GlamPods or heading to Kielder Waterside.

It's free to enter. Worth it? Absolutely, especially if you're tired of overcrowded honeypot spots.
